Baptism by immersion is the next step you take after committing your life to Christ. At Mosaic it's called "Taking the Plunge!" and it's a celebratory event filled with family, friends, food and your story of how God has changed your life, forever.
The Scriptures teach us a few key truths about baptism:
- Jesus was baptized by immersion
- After Jesus came up from the water, the Father in heaven was heard as saying "I am pleased" (God is pleased when we obey Him)
- Once someone had made a conscious decision to trust Jesus with their lives, they were baptized by immersion rather quickly
- Baptism is an outward symbol of an inward change. It doesn't save us, but it let's the world know that our life is now 'in Christ'
- Baptism was meant to be done only once, after a commitment to follow Jesus
FAQ about 'Taking the Plunge' at Mosaic:
How do I know for sure I am ready to be baptized?
If you have made a decision to trust Christ with your life by faith, receiving God's grace as a gift to take away your sins and place you into His community then you are ready to be baptized! If you still don't know for sure if this is the right step for you then talk to your life group leader or one of our lead team staff.
When is the next baptism?
We do baptisms as often as they are needed. If you are interested in being baptized by taking the plunge then please let our office staff know. We will hook you up as soon as possible.
Where does Mosaic do baptisms?
Wherever there is water deep enough to dunk you! Seriously, we will hold baptisms in backyard pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers or big portable tubs we pull behind trucks. It doesn't matter where as long as there is water, a crowd of friends and supporters and a willing heart to follow Jesus.
What if I have already been baptized by immersion but want to do it again?
This is a tough one. Short answer- it depends. If you were committed to Jesus and you believed that His grace had come into your life to take away your sin and shame, then our question would be 'why would you want to be baptized again?' The scriptures only show of Christ' followers being baptized once. Once is all it takes, so if you heart was right 'back then' then you are golden.
However, if you were baptized to please mom and/or dad, make a pastor proud or because your friends were doing it and NOT because it really did represent an inward change in your life then we would encourage you to 1) make sure you have a made a personal focused commitment to Jesus and 2) obey Jesus and be baptized again, this time as a follower of Jesus (and not as a follower of _____).
What if I was baptized as an infant?
Infant baptisms were done because many of our parents cared deeply about our spiritual condition. We respect their concern, but at the same time we recognize that baptism needs to be a choice made by a follower of Jesus. As an infant you hadn't made a decision to follow Jesus, or Buddha, or be an Agnostic. That was a decision made completely by your parents. Honor them by thanking them for being concerned for your spiritual well-being, but now obey the scriptures and be baptized by immersion (as Jesus was) as an act of your own will.
Who can baptize me at Mosaic?
Anyone who is a committed follower of Jesus Christ can baptize you here at Mosaic. Your parents, life group leader, brother/sister or one of our pastors. You choose! Just let them, and us, know about it so we can all be prepared.
What's up with that cool shirt?
Everyone who takes the plunge at Mosaic receives a 'one of it's kind' t-shirt to wear during their baptism. It's a cool shirt that reminds the world of your commitment to obey Jesus and make a public statement for others to see. Our baptisms are parties! And this is an excellent party gift for you!
